“Old Gala Club Goes on Holiday”

Exhibition Opening Night

Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland.

20th March 2008

Jim Hume, MSP with club Vice President Murray Dickson

Jim Hume, MSP for the South of Scotland, and Councillor for the Galashiels and District region of Scottish Borders Council opens the exhibition “Old Gala Club Goes On Holiday”, which is the third in the “Goes On” series. In previous years Old Gala Club has gone Shopping, and gone to Church. The club is considering where to go next year, and it is most likely that “Old Gala Club Goes to War” will be the theme as 2009 will be the 70th anniversary year since the start of the Second World War. It is hoped that club members will have a look for their wartime photographs and artefacts.

The Old Gala Club was founded in 1947 with the aim of preserving the history of Galashiels for future generations. The club currently has about 12,000 photographs, 15,000 slides, 4000 artefacts and a large archive of paperwork. This exhibition is slightly different as it is the people of the town not the streets, buildings or workplaces. It is what we, and our ancestors did for holidays before world travel.

The free exhibition runs from 21st March to 29th June 2008 in Old Gala
House.

It is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.00 am - 4.00 pm during March, April and May; and Monday to Saturday 10.00 am - 4.00 pm plus Sunday 1.00 - 4.00 pm in June 2008.

Vice-President Murray Dickson dedicated the exhibition to the memory of Derek Thornton, who has given many years service to the club, including diligently reporting all lectures. Murray also thanked Hamish Dobson, Helen Elliott, Bob McKendrick, Norman Houldsworth, Patricia Maitland Cullen, Catherine Rogerson and John Rogerson for their work in putting together this exhibition, and Brian Appleby of Museum Service for the painting of the cartoon photographic board at the entrance.
